Trails:

    • Polihale Beach – OPEN – LEARN MORE

      • Hit the road and discover the stunning coastline of Kauai. Scenic views of the Nāpali coast offer colorful sunsets, relaxing swim spots, and high-cliff overlooks. This drivable beach on the west side has significance to Hawaiians – it’s soft, fluffy sand and amazing views look out on the “forbiden island” of Niihau. Be sure to avoid driving near the water line and over wet sand near the ocean, as there is a good chance of getting stuck, even after airing down and with 4-wheel drive and differential lockers.
    • Jurassic Park Gate Trail – OPEN – LEARN MORE

      • Attention movie lovers! Explore the iconic filming locations of the Jurassic Park movie franchise on this trail. The Nāpali Coast is home to the fictional Isla Sorna, and is filled with lush forests, waterfalls, and a swimming spot at the end of the trail. This route is used by hunters, those looking to hike to Blue Hole or Weeping Wall on Mount Waialeale, or those looking to visit spots featured in the 1993 movie. This trail includes a couple of water crossings, and it is recomended to avoid fording the water when it’s raining up on Waialeale. We recommend wading into the water on foor to assess the water depth before crossing.

FAQs: Off-Road Vehicle Rental Questions

Find Your Answer Here

What are the best 4×4/off-road trails on Kauai?

To learn more about off-roading on Kauai, click here. Some of the most popular trails on the island include Jurassic Gate Trail, Polihale Beach State Park, and backcountry routes through Koke’e State Park.

Where can I rent a Jeep approved for off-road use on Kauai?

Our Kauai fleet is parked in a secured parking facility at Ahukini Flats in Lihue, Kauai. Pick up or delivery is by appointment only so please email sales@drivediff.com or call us at 970.519.8004 to discuss your travel plans and the best way to get you your vehicle. We generally can accommodate late airport arrivals or departures (no fee) and delivery to Poipu or Princeville / Hanalei (for a fee) and dependent on staffing availability.

What types of vehicles are available for rent?

Currently, we offer 4 off-road approved vehicles on Kauai; Ford Bronco Badlands Edition (4-door, soft top, and 33” tires), Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited (4-door, powered soft top, and 33” tires), Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited Xtreme Recon (4-door, powered soft top, lifted, and 35” tires), and Jeep Gladiator Mojave (4-door, soft top, and 33” tires

Do 4×4 rentals come with insurance?

We do not provide in-house insurance with our rentals. We require that primary drivers provide proof of valid auto insurance including liability, comprehensive, and collision coverages (full coverage) prior to operating a vehicle.

Can I take the rental off-road?

Yes. We allow our 4×4 vehicles (Jeeps & Broncos) to be driven on off-road trails recognized in the U.S. Forest Service Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUMs) and the Hawai’i Division of State Parks. When you rent a 4×4, remember to “tread lightly” and “stay the trail” to respect the wilderness and avoid fines for illegal motorized travel.

Are there extra fees for off-roading?

No, there are no extra fees for off-roading with a 4×4 from Diff.

Do I need a 4×4 for mountain passes or trails?

A true 4×4 vehicle is strongly recommended (and sometimes essential) depending on the trail, season, and weather.

Is there a mileage limit?

The rental allows unlimited mileage, except when the Vehicle is driven on Prohibited Trails, outside the Permitted Driving Area, or off a designated roadway or trail. If the Company discovers by any means that the Vehicle was driven in one of these Restricted Areas, the Unlimited Mileage provision of the Rental Agreement is deemed void and as a penalty, you agree to pay the daily rental rate plus thirty cents per total mile driven during the duration of the rental.

Are pets allowed in the rental?

We allow pets. However, we recommend that you do not bring a pet on an off-road trip. Our experience is that many pets do not like traveling in a vehicle over rough off-road terrain and that some pets get ill riding in a vehicle under these conditions. Removing pet hair from the carpets and seats in our vehicles can be challenging and time consuming for our staff. Most customers do not have access to the proper cleaning equipment or do not want to take the time to adequately remove all pet hair, dirt, and debris prior to returning the vehicle. Should you decide to transport a pet inside the Vehicle, a cleaning fee starting at $30 will likely be assessed.

Is there a seasonal difference in pricing?

No, our prices are consistent and year-round at our Kauai location.

Do 4×4 rentals come with GPS or trail navigation?

No, rentals do not come with GPS or trail navigation, however, we provide maps and other off-road resources on our Kauai Trails page. Additionally, our vehicles have the ability to hook up to your cell phone via USB cable or Bluetooth. We highly recommend downloading maps and routes to follow as service is spotty in areas of the mountain, and you will likely be unable to access anything that is not downloaded to your device when on-trail.

Are rentals equipped with winches, lift kits, or skid plates?

No, rentals are not equipped with winches or skid plates. Our Lifted Jeep Wrangler Rubicons are equipped with a 1.5-inch lift kit from Mopar, so they have an aggressive stance and enhanced ground clearance to conquer any terrain with ease.

Are soft tops or hard tops available?

Our 4×4 vehicles have the Bestop Sunrider soft top installed year-round at this location.

Do your vehicles have all-terrain or mud-terrain tires?

Yes, all of our 4×4’s have all-terrain or mud-terrain off-road tires year-round, ranging from 33”-35” depending on the make and model of vehicle.

Do rentals include recovery gear (tow straps, shovels, etc.)?

No, our rentals do not include any recovery gear, however, you are welcome to bring your own.

Is camping or beach gear included or available for rent?

No, we do not offer camping gear for rent at this time. We do have beach chairs, umbrellas, 28qt coolers, 55qt coolers, car seats, and booster seats available as rental add-ons.

Can I use the vehicle in state parks?

What’s the best time of year for off-roading on Kauai?

While the island weather allows for year-round off-roading and outdoor recreation, May to September is typically regarded as the best time of year as the weather is drier (firmer dirt roads and sand), there is a lower flood risk on access roads, and views are clearer. October to April can experience heavy rainfall, especially on the north and east sides of the island. Unpaved roads can flood and change conditions quickly. Be sure to do your research and check the weather before hitting the trails

Can I rent a vehicle for just one day?

No, we have a 3-day minimum rental requirement at our Kauai location.

Do vehicles come with trail guides or suggested routes?

You can reach our trail guides via call or text anytime at 970.519.8004. Visit our Trails page on our website for more information and resources on trails in the area.

Can I take the top/doors off the vehicle?

No. Removal of the doors or hard top are not permitted for any reason.
